Childhood obesity reaches global epidemic levels

Research 7 August 2026

For the first time ever, the number of children worldwide living with obesity has surpassed the number experiencing underweight. This significant global shift should have sparked widespread attention, yet it has largely gone unnoticed.

Research from the KidsRights Index 2026 reveals that 391 million school-aged children are now living with overweight, a figure that has doubled since the beginning of the century. However, the scale of the issue extends beyond these statistics. Childhood obesity is not simply a public health challenge, it is also a children’s rights issue. Governments have a legal responsibility to take action, yet progress in addressing this crisis remains insufficient.

Today, 391 million school-aged children are living with overweight - twice as many as at the start of the century.

The findings are particularly concerning in the United Kingdom. The KidsRights UK Supplement 2026 reveals that almost one in three children aged 5–19 are living with overweight or obesity. This is around 3.7 million children, wit this 30% being approximately double the proportion seen in comparable countries such as France and Italy. The research also highlights the the significant role of socio-economic inequality, with children living in the most deprived communities disproportionately affected.

Nearly 1 in 3 school-going children in the UK are overweight or are living with obesity.
